Freemasonry and Benevolence

Caring in the community

Freemasons have engaged in charitable and benevolent activities since the earliest days of the fraternity.   The care expressed in such activities by Freemasons extends beyond fellow members and their relatives to the wider community.

Caring is mediated through various bodies which include:

GRAND LODGE CARE COMMITTEE

The Grand Lodge Care Committee is led by the Chairman of Care.  The Committee works to encourage and develop the procedures of Care within Freemasonry, to extend fraternity and relief in strength to members, their widows and families.  Membership of the committee includes the Grand Chaplain and district representatives.

Guidelines have been formulated to assist and train Lodge Care Officers and Lodge Care Committees in various areas, including:

~ contact with sick and absent members, and families of deceased members
~ formation and support of Masonic Widows' Associations (pdf file 840 kb) in the various Districts
~ encouraging and develop twinning of Lodges
~ facilitating transfers of membership where necessary
~ support and advice to members, widowers, widows and their families, bearing in mind
differing needs for caring, consideration, compassion and consolation

~ providing information on availability of services where necessary to members or their families
~ suggesting possible sources of benevolence
~ home hosting panel where emergency accommodaion is required
~ advice on admission to the Masonic Homes and on activities of the Masonic Foundation
~ interaction with various community services
